$50 for WHAT? 0

I found out last week that although Windows Vista will have a snazzy new firewall, by default it will be set to block only incoming traffic — unless you decide to pay Microsoft an extra US$50 a year.

I wonder how long this will last before the public outcry forces them to retreat.  What a silly silly idea.

it’s not that bad, is it? 0

“I can’t deal with windows.  Makes me nauseated within minutes.    I’m
not kidding.

The total lack of any intelligent design effort gradually eats away
my will to live.”

From the osxhack list.  Gee, if you think that’s bad, try some of the Linux Desktop Environments….

When I saw this, I wondered if it was some kind of joke - but it looks like it’s the real thing.  Interesting…

this report form eweek quotes a micro$ofty saying that in some cases, recovery from malware infestation is impossible. The article gives this example:

an unnamed branch of the U.S. government struggled with malware infestations on more than 2,000 client machines. “In that case, it was so severe that trying to recover was meaningless. They did not have an automated process to wipe and rebuild the systems, so it became a burden. They had to design a process real fast,”

makes me think that system like Ghost and other similar auto-install processes might be a good thing to look into.
