Training
Report
The
Liberty Hill Foundation training
was a success. Thirty-four participants representing sixteen different
organizations attended the event. Organizers and funders focused on
challenges and opportunities of technology use for organizing, assessment
and planning concepts and practice, resource identification and case
studies of grassroots organizing strategies.
In
March 2002, Liberty Hill approached PTP about Liberty Hill grantees'
desire to better understand how technology can support grassroots' efforts.
This training was a welcome addition to the preset schedule of organizational
development trainings offered through Liberty Hill as part of a Ford
Foundation grant. Liberty Hill's goal was to have this first ever technology
training to respond to grantee needs, and simultaneously to assess whether
it was useful and offer it in future years.
The
Goals and Objectives of the Training were:
-
Develop an understanding of technology as a means and not an end in
organizing
-
Learn
from, share and discuss case studies of effective use of technology
in organizing
-
Develop
participants' understanding and practice technology assessment and
planning
-
Learn
what essential mechanisms are needed to support on-going technology
usage
-
Share
and discuss how groups have addressed their technology needs
-
Discern
what services are appropriate for grassroots groups
-
Learn
how to structure technology grant proposals and who to go to for funding
We successfully achieved
the training goals. The agenda covered all of the topics and participants
were able to engage in numerous hands-on activities.
Internally PTP had
its own set of goals so that we can continue to be relevant to grassroots
groups. All of the internal goals were met.
- Reach PTP constituents
as defined by the PTP Strategic Plan;
- Test out curriculum
content and methods;
- Build an on-going
relationship with Liberty Hill, a foundation practicing many of PTP's
grantmaking objectives.
All in
all, the event was fun and well done. The number one complaint from participants
was that they worked hard throughout the day. They thought they were going
to come to a training and sit back. Instead they spent their day defining
strategic use, learning from each other, teaching parts of the training
and practicing the valuable skills PTP wants them to have and retain after
the training.
